Fertility meds

In your opinion, how early is too early to ask for fertility treatment? I was told I would need help trying to have a baby. I'm 21, husband is 22. & he is in the military. So when he's home we don't use any protection, we haven't really been trying but after 3 months of no protection & no baby, we decided we want to be more serious about it. Should I consult with my doctor about the next step or wait a while?
