What if your kid told you they're transgender?

We've had the 'if they were gay' question, now let's have the transgender question. Would you be supportive or not?

Personally I'd get them to a psychologist ASAP, seeing as gender dysphoria is a serious mental health issue. Then I'd give them all the support I could. I'd be accepting either way.

I'm hoping to raise my kids as gender neutral as possible, so they can discover for themselves what gender they most identify with. I do plan on using their birth assigned pronouns, but will absolutely use the pronouns they choose if they realize they're trans, genderqueer or agender.

All I want is for my kids to be themselves and happy with who they are. I don't want them to experience the shame and struggle I went through while coming to terms with being different.

Big hug, counseling support (which I believe all kids benefit from), and any support they need from my hubby and I.

We believe that every person is valuable for who they are, regardless of whether or not it fits "the norm." Which, by the way, we think that the construct of "the norm" is bullcrap.

I would absolutely support them. I would offer to get them counseling if they wanted it and I would do anything I could to let them know I was there if they needed help or even just a shoulder to cry on.

I am confused. I'm not trying to be rude. I just have a question. I thought transgender was something you would know about your child when they were born? Is it not that they have two genders? I'm confused sorry for my  unknowledgeableness.  But what exactly is transgender?

I would support them no matter what. I'm sure it would be hard, but they are my child, so in the end their happiness is all that matters. I've spoken to parents of transgender kids, and it's hard. They kind of have to mourn the child they no longer have. This one woman had to say goodbye to the daughter she only knew and embrace the son she know had. It was difficult, but she got through it because in the end what she felt couldn't compare to the pain her child was going through, trying to figure out who they truly were.
