When should I tell work?

Im 6w3d have my first appointment on New Year's eve but can't stop wondering when it's okay to tell work? I work in cosmetics and only occasionally have to lift some things but could be up for a more permanent position at a counter soon (I'm on call currently) so I don't want to ruin my chances by telling to soon and having them not wanting to hire someone who will need to eventually take maternity leave. Stressing over this!

I told all my managers right away. My job is somewhat physical at times though so it made sense. I didn't want them just thinking I was being lazy when really I am exhausted from making a baby!! Haha. But I would think in your situation I would wait to see if I got the new job and then tell them when it felt right.

It's illegal to not promote you because of pregnancy status. It doesn't mean they won't do it, but it means you may have legal recourse.

Tell them when you feel you need to. If you are no longer able to do your work safely or need special arrangements, you may need to do so earlier.

I told work straight away but only because I work with violent children and have to restrain them so didn't want to be put in that position! I would wait a while tho if your work doesn't put you in danger. I wouldn't have said anything till 12 weeks under different circumstances

It's against the law for an employer to discriminate against you because you are pregnant or a new mother, but discrimination happens anyway.

First, do some research about your company's maternity policies. Talk to Human Resources or check the handbook or website.

Tell your boss (and ONLY the boss) before you start to show. Try to approach her at a time when you've had a particularly good sales week or you've done something else heroic at work. Make sure to tell your boss about your plan for wrapping up work, coverage while you're out, and when you plan to return. If possible, memorialize the conversion in writing via email so there is no confusion later.

Thank you all for the responses and support! I am going to wait until after my appointment and then see what happens with work in the next few weeks. I haven't been sick yet, just tired so I think I will be okay waiting.

I told work as soon as I knew because for maternity leave they will have to find coverage while I'm off, we r already short staffed and I'm the only person that gives shots in office. Plus I could have to do lifting or help moving things so now they know ahead of time :-)

I'm 6weeks - I'm hoping to not have to tell work until I've had my 12 week scan...unless I get sick and need to tell them earlier. I work in an office job so shouldn't be an issue with heavy lifting...and I've already covered myself a little with pain/going to the toilet frequently, Drs appointments and not drinking - I've said I've got a bladder infection and its persistent so I'm on a 4 week course of antibiotics...that will take me to my first midwife appointment which I will then say is a doctors appointment and that the bladd r infection still hasn't cleared up...hopefully will do the trick until I can finally say 'oh actually I'm pregnant' xx

I told my jobs immediately. I do home health care and work at gamestop. I told them both because they involve heavy lifting and the home health family I work for is so wonderful they help. GameStop has put me on lift restrictions so I just do register now. It's a big stress off my body because I don't have to fret if I do get put in a situation where I am supposed to do something I can't.
