Natural Childbirth?

Question

Anyone been through it? I don't want to use drugs when I deliver my baby.  Did anything help you and what did you do during pregnancy that helped during pregnancy?

My first baby I went all natural and it took 8hours and was a lot more smoothly than I expected but being really certain and strong about how I felt about going natural and being very well educated about what and why my body was doig what it was doig helped a lot! I also walked a ton and it helped me dialated really fast. I went from 4-8 in just an hour or two after a walk.

I had my second baby unmedicated. It was wonderful. My recommendations are to drink red raspberry leaf tea throught your third trimester (2-3 cups /day), and use water during labor (shower/tub) if at all possible.

I had both my children unmedicated. I did sit in the tub at home with my second child until I was ready to go to the hospital but other than that I just let my body do what it was designed to do.

Doctors look for a more convinient/fast way and you need to stand up for what is best for your family.

Stay active during pregnancy. Squat a lot to build up pelvic floor muscles. Not just doing squats but getting in that position for 10-15 min is what I did. Practice deep breathing and meditation. My book recommendations are to read Ina May Gaskins Guide to Natutal Childbirth and The book Birthing from Within. The second one seems a little hippy dippy but worth the read and do the exercises! It's very important to identify your fears and learn how to let go during labor. Have your own affirmations and mantras to guide you. If you prepare and have a good support person and don't give up it can be done.

Walk. A lot. Don't sit or lay if you can, unless you need to. Squat. Sitting on a toilet feels oddly amazing. Shower or baths are great! And I second that red raspberry leaf tea. Keep positive thoughts and take one contraction at a time, especially the stage of labor when you get close to pushing. That's where most women lose control. And have someone there who can encourage you :-) happy labor!

I had 13 hours of unmedicated labor. My water broke so we had to go to the hospital and after they hooked me up to the monitors they showed me I had been having contractions every five mins. I couldn't feel them at all! I finally felt them a few hours later when they were about 90-120 seconds apart. We kept our room quiet and I just focused on breathing. We didn't tell anyone we were at the hospital and I swear that helped eliminate so much stress. We were able to ignore our phones and didn't have visitors or phone calls to deal with. I made it up to being ready to push and had to have an emergency c-section but even by that point, my pain was only a 5 on the 1-10 scale. I just let my body do what it needed to and relaxed. It's totally a mental game so often believe in yourself, you can do it!
