Dental work while pregnant?

What can/can't I have done? I'm having severe gum pain/sensitivity next to a tooth that had a root canal a few months ago. I hope it's not complications with that. I usually need a ton of pain injections and nitrous because I'm very anxious about the dentist and my teeth have always been overly sensitive. I'm going to a dentist tomorrow..

I am a dental hygienist. Make an appt with your dentist. He can do an visual inspection and check the gums. As it is an emergency and weighing the benefits vs risks, the dentist can take one X-ray to check that tooth and the teeth next to it. You will wear a lead apron which will protect you and the baby for the X-ray. The radition from the X-rays will be less than the radiation you will get from taking a one hour flight. You can have dental treatment completed. To numb you for treatment if necessary, they will use Lidocaine to numb you which is a pregnancy class B which is ok for pregnancy like Tylenol. As for nitrous gas, you cannot have it. To help ease your dental anxiety, bring your headphones with your favorite music to help relax and maybe a blanket. You will not feel much when they numb you and they can give multiple injections and still be safe for you and baby. Good luck!!

No x Rays while pregnant for your teeth. They can do everything else. Your gums might bleed more is all.

I had a temporary crown re-done due to my gum above being really irritated just the other day at 20 weeks pregnant but he didn't want to use any injections. But because I had a full root canal and no feeling in that tooth, he was able to do everything without medication needed

Your ob can answer. I had an ER root canal Friday, 3 implants placed about a month ago...they use a special kind of novacaine and you take Tylenol...my OB gave me a dental letter explaining everything.

I had a painful wisdom tooth removed at 23 weeks pregnant. They used novocaine which is safe in pregnancy and I went home on Tylenol for pain. They prefer to do dental work in the second trimester when the baby is just growing but if you are in pain they will do what they need to do no matter what trimester you are in because over all it will be best for your baby. I couldn't have the laughing gas or be put out but I couldn't feel a thing with the novocaine alone.
