Courthouse marriage, wedding later?

Question

My SO and I are seriously considering getting married, soon. We're thinking just getting married in a courthouse and later down the road having a real wedding,  when we can afford it, and have it back home so our families can be there. (We're stationed in California,  everyone we love is back home on the east coast.)

I just want to know (in the comments) if you did have one how it worked, like the steps you had to take and also your personal experience with it/ why you liked it or didn't like it.

I had a courthouse marriage in April 2012 and a big wedding in May 2013. I don't regret it at all. We decided to do the courthouse wedding because I was pregnant, I wanted to cut back on work and wanted to have insurance lol. Seems like a silly reason to get married but we were engaged and already had the wedding planning started for the next year, we knew we were getting married, just pushed it up a year. We actually only told our family that we were married, no one else knew. I was worried if people knew we were married, they wouldn't come up our wedding, which I know now is crazy. The next year we had our big wedding, it was perfect, so much fun and already being married didn't take away from it at all. It worked for us, no regrets.

I had a court house wedding. I will not be having a 2nd wedding later. It seems silly to me since we're already married. I'd rather buy a house.

We cant wait anymore. We want to do it sooner than when we can afford because we feel married already and were slowly gettin to were we dont care about a weddin and just a reception

I haven't but my brother did. He is also stationed in California and he and his wife got married in 2013. They are having a wedding this august and we just went and found her wedding dress and bridesmaid dresses this past weekend!

My husband and I were planning on having a courthouse wedding because we wanted to be married and to have the real deal we'd have to wait a year or longer because he's navy and all his family and friends live far away. We somehow made it work and had a small wedding on the beach, his parents and siblings made it and a friend as well. My family was there. I was pretty happy I went with that just so I didn't have to basically have two weddings. But honest, if the courthouse works best for you do it! But if it's possible to do something small so it feels more like a ceremony I'd say try.

My husband is in the Marine Corps  and we just did ours in Vegas and yes it was our  wedding but we don't really considerate that in Vegas it wasn't like a real wedding so it did take a lot of pressure off of wedding planning. Out real wedding will be next March and we just got married December 30 2014 , this last year so overall it's a good idea

It Kinda makes u feel like crap tho because u didnt have a real one :( but gotta remember that you married your half and best friend and that's really what matters and is the whole point of it but also remember to that the real wedding is being planned  for and is gonna be awesome and better than ever!!!!

I did it since he is in the military and it made everything easier legally, not to mention I could start receiving benefits. It took a lot of pressure off of planning our big wedding. You will have to decide which anniversary to celebrate. The downside is, a lot of people may question why you got married yet you will have a bigger wedding later. Everyone in my family thought he knocked me up.
