Birth control Hormone explosion!!!

So I started the pill for the first time mid January. On this package I started my period early and bled heavily for ten days. I also felt very shaky and violent and paranoid all the time during the last four-five days of bleeding. It was horrible. I did not feel myself at all. The pain was so bad no amount of medication, no matter what kind, would help. Any relief wore off very fast. And now I am on my inactive pills and not bleeding. I am worried that I am not protected at this point. Should I switch to something else? Like another brand? Or shouldI Allow  some time for my body to adjust? I just don't want to go through this rage again. This is no joke. I thought birth control was supposed to regulate your hormones and your cycle. Not fuck it up! Lol. Advice please??
