How exactly does BC work? I start mine tomorrow!

Question

So tomorrow I start ortho tri Cyclen lo and there are different colored pills, and I was just wondering what the purpose of each was!
Also, what should I expect when I first start it? I know everyone reacts differently. 
And how long should I wait for it to become fully effective?

Check out planned parenthood's website. It's super informative and does a great job of explaining how all birth controls work and pros and cons of each. And don't be scared to ask your health care provider. They want to answer these questions too!
