Breast-feeding and birth control?!

Question

So, I went to my pp check up today and my doctor said if I'm exclusively breastfeeding that I don't have to worry about birth control...is that true?! 
He was saying that if I'm Breast feeding that my body thinks/reacts as if I'm still pregnant (no periods/no ovulating)...so that I don't need birth control but it is still an option. 
Just want to know what you ladies think...

I wouldn't count on it. I've known several people who have thought the same thing and were pregnant  again within several months.

Your chances of getting pregnant are reduced but you ovulate before you get your period so there is still a chance of pregnancy at any time. I got my period back 6 weeks postpartum with my first. I would be considering a back up plan.
