When to add salt to homemade pinto beans?

I heard you're not supposed to add salt until they're soft because if you add if before the salt won't let them get soft..

The mexican way lol.. Salt, garlic and onions add right away. They will cook just fine.

My grandpa always cooks them in it. And he will check it here and there and add a little if it needs it. So that's how I do it too.
