Doula?

Question

Is anyone else considering working with a doula? I really like the idea, but I don't know enough about them. (Also a bit concerned about the fees I read online.)

I know someone who is/was a doula in her own practice for many years, now is with a small practice. I met her (she is wife of my coworker) and instantly knew she would be AMaZING. Her name is Becca Gattey, and I think she's downtown in NW portland. Thinking of asking her if she does freelance work cause she would be the ultimate person for this role. Otherwise, honestly, I would have never considered it.

So here is the only thing that I think will be interesting and want to figure out if I have a doula. I mostly want my husband in that role- but would be helpful to have someone more knowledgable helping us too 😇 I just think the dynamic might be a little hard for him- either stepping back more since someone else is there to comfort me, or feeling funny being directed by that person as to what he should be doing to help me. It seems like a delicate balance to navigate in a stressful time, so definitely I want to put some thought into that part.

I'm interviewing at least 2 of them next month. I think I will be very grateful for her in the coming months. It gives me so much peace of mind, especially since I am so fearful of hospitals and doctors. Any measure to reduce anxiety will be a plus for me.

I am thinking about it. I am delivering at a stand alone birth center with a team of three midwives, so I'm not sure if I will need and want one. If I was going to deliver at a hospital I would definitely hire one, no question. If the fee is an issue for you, consider someone in training or with little experience. Their fees range but you might be able to find one that will do it for little or no charge to gain experience.
