How do you feel about spanking?

I know there are some parents who feel this is wrong, but I feel like as long as no one is beating the child and they don't spank them all of the time it shouldn't be a big deal!

Spanking? .. yourl ain't seen nothing yet ..I'm from South Africa.. there people don't care whether you like them or not because they spank their kids. Because they believe its a bloody effective way. They can spank their kids is a shopping mall full of people and couldn't care less what you would think. And trust me lesson learnt ... everyone is entitled to their own opinion and is entitled to raise their children in a way they feel best .. hell I was spanked when I was a kid .. so where my brothers n sister .. and we didn't like it. But we understand why it was done. Our parents never stopped when we where 7.. no ways. And I would do the same to my kids. If I feel that this is how they will turn out well then I will do it... if you're gonna say " oh my god you do this and that to your child " .. its not going to hurt me or make me feel what im doing is wrong ... no ... we all have our own ways.

I have issues with it. I don't want my children growing up thinking it's okay for people to touch them when they don't want to be touched. That's why I will never raise a hand to them that brings physical pain or otherwise. If I'm tickeling my child or being playful and they say stop, I will stop. Immediately. I don't care if I'm their parent or not, children's bodies shouldn't be violated by anyone in anyway.

I was spanked as a child. Was I a fan of it? Hell no. But was I well behaved? Hell yes!! I saw a little boy jumping all over the bread counter in front of the deli the other day and his mother is just standing there looking like "well, it's not like there's anything I can do about it." People are going to buy that and her son is jumping on it.....not cool. My mother would have killed me for doing something like that. I would have never ever done something like that because I knew I would get spanked. A little fear in my life didn't killed me and it sure did make me a better person! When I was young I hated it but now that I'm older I completely understand that I could have been like that boy I saw and that is just completely unacceptable to me. I don't hate my parents for spanking me, I don't think it was abusive, it was the right thing to do.

My son gets spankings.. He is 4 now and he don't get them anymore. He is a very well behaved child and everyone tells him how good he is and he loves that. Plus it helps when we see other kids and he looks at me and says  wow mommy they are really bad I'm glad I don't do that.

I spanked my first until he was four. I figure it is the most effective for behavior shaping at that age, and they don't really remember much before five anyway. He is a very good boy. I don't spank my second (he is two) I give him a lip flick. He responds better to that. I don't have to often. I'll also stop when he is four.

Hit a dog-illegal.... Hit you're spouse-illegal... Hit any adult-illegal....how in the hell is it only ok to hit the most vulnerable living being? It males me pretty sick. Especially rationalizing it with "he won't remember anyway" if you don't want him to remember, it means its WRONG! I was hot as a child, and I am not ok. Hitting teaches a child fear. It teaches them that as long as someone is doing something "bad" they can hit them. It teaches guilt.

I can't understand how so many women are on here rationalizing reasons why it is or was okay to smack their children. As if a butt is okay, but a face is not? As if hitting them hard is abuse but hitting them lightly is discipline? The rationalization is just so hypocritical.

Spanking doesn't solve the problem. Its like Tylenol.  It relieves the symptom but doesn't get rid of the underlying problem. They need to sit with you and lusten to why it's wrong.  For example, at my school, my kids love to climb the hills of snow that pile up close to the school walls. Instead of spanking or yelling or grabbing them, I made them all look up at the roof to see the icicles and explained what icicles would do when they melted and that they should keep themselves safe. Now, they not only stay away from the walls, but also remind each other to stay away from the walls. Even parents have told me that their kids tell them to be careful under the icicles.

I know parents who spank and parents who take away privileges. Both of their children are as well behaved as you can expect at their age. I was spanked when I was younger but my dad always made a point to sit me down and explain to me why what I did was wrong and allow me to justify my actions, he never just went straight to spanking. I think whatever the parent decides is best works, as long as the child understands that they are still loved but have done something wrong.
