Raising baby herbivore or carnivore?

Question

Is anyone here a vegetarian/ vegan?

If so, will you let him/her eat meat until he/she is old enough to decide for themselves?

Or will you feed him/her the same diet as you until they grow up to decide otherwise?

I'm vegan and I feed my son the same things I eat. When he gets old enough and decides he wants to eat something else I will honor that decision.

I am not vegan or vegetarian. But this is how I see it. I cook dinner. ONE dinner. You eat what's there or find something else for yourself.

As my kids get older, I see their tastes changing and I ask their input on the shopping list. But that is a courtesy I am affording them and nothing more. My husband and I make the final decisions because we are buying the food.

However, my friend is vegetarian and is raising her kids like that. One of them ate bacon at my house because he wanted to try it. I, not being a vegetarian, didn't think much about it. He wants to try it? Let him. That's how I am with my kids. I encourage them to try new foods (and we have a standing rule at my house that you can't just say you don't like something you've never tried). But she had a cow because he ate a piece of bacon. Like, really? Talking about how disappointed she was in him. That's taking it WAAAAYYYY too far.

Feed them meat, I think that its a personal choice when they grow up. They may just follow you or they may not, either way its not bad.

Babies need lots of different fats, proteins etc so if you do decide to feed your child a vegan or veg I diet, it's vital that you consult a dr or dietician to make sure they are getting the right combo of nutrients to support their growing bodies. I personally don't agree with a vegan / veto diet for kids but that's me. I don't want to start a debate but I also don't understand why you'd be vego and not vegan if you don't want to eat meat.

If I was a vegetarian I would raise my child as one. But if they wanted to eat meat I wouldn't say no.

My mom is a vegetarian and a mom of 4. I'm the oldest. When we were younger she didn't feed us meat until we were old enough to really understand what it was. The only meat I eat is chicken. My younger brother who is 15 eats all meats. My next younger brother is 8 and doesn't want to eat any meat and my youngest brother who is 3 still doesn't quite understand it all.

I'm a vegan and plan on keeping dairy and red meat out of my kids diet. I make a lot of free range chicken for my husband and will use this and local eggs, as well as a little fish but that's about it in terms of animal products. I will definitely be keeping gelatin out of their diet. Disgusting!!

Providing the children still get all the essential proteins, irons, vitamins and minerals they require for healthy growing minds and bodies, I don't think it really matters.

Im a pescastarian. I would definitely feed them meat but if they decided they didnt want to anymore i wouldnt be against it.

Great question and I don't know the answer! I eat fish but my husband is an omnivore and I don't know yet what we will do. I have friends who are vegan & vegetarian and have raised their kids the same way (although I think the vegan parents feed their kid eggs) but it seems easier when both parents eat the same!
