What would you consider

My family makes 50,000 a year,  my sip made the remark that she doesn't understand how we live off a lower class income with a family of 3 living in a small city in southern Indiana.
 I didn't take much into what she said since she's 34 and single and lives with still lives at home  and is a pizza delivery driver.
But it makes me wonder what do people think is consider lower and what's considered middle.

It all boils down to money management and responsibility. And of course, depends on where you live.

My husband supports a family of 6 on about that amount. We aren't wealthy by any means, but we live comfortably. It's all about money management.

I live in Oklahoma. The cost of living here is SUPER DUPER CHEAP!!! Our total family income is about $81k a year, but it doesn't feel we make that. We aren't living paycheck to paycheck but by no means are we vacationing or living a fancy life.... And that's just for 2 of us. I foresee having to stretch our money for a baby being hard bc I'm pretty bad at spending on useless things.

I'm sure whether that amount is considered lower or middle class depends on the cost of living in your area, but my first thought is that $50k a year for a family is definitely lower class.

Cost of living varies location to location.

I move counties here in Pennsylvania one closer to Philadelphia and average medium household income went from 43,000 to 62,000. And with cost of living rents almost doubled and food prices are higher. So its all in relation to a lot of things how people make it work on income levels and budgets.

Where I live, $50k a year would be lower class for a family because it would be hard to cover rent with that. I think it all depends on cost of living.

1 bedroom apartments start around $1900 a month where I live.

Where I live, that would be lower, but salaries tend to be much higher here as well! DH and I make about $130k and I'd say we're middle. Our crappy, unrenovated bungalow in an ok neighborhood cost $680k 5 years ago.

In my head I consider:
Lower $ bracket: $30,000-
Middle $: $40,000+
Higher $: $70,000+

For now my family is at the higher but we've been middle before and then lower. For now we are higher but with the economy going down in Canada and so many job losses in my area (over 14,000 people were let go this week).

If I were to move out and live by myself I would be in the lower bracket. But I'm super lucky and have a family that wants me to save for a half down payment (so half of total house cost) before moving out. They want me totally set up first. So i have to have enough saved to get everything for inside the house + emergency $$ for if something busts. I'm really thankful I don't have to go out and work full time paying a mortgage when this is the time the risk of losing a house would be there.

Here in SoCal I'd say lower middle- but dh only makes $30000 (just took a lower paying job so he could be home more) our rent is $2000 a month and we have 2 kids! It's tight!

Where I live it would be lower, but I may be biased. I'm a spoiled lil' rich girl with a single mom. I have a bit of an underestimation of how jobs/income work.
