Cold sores....herpes?

Do cold sores on lips come from the same thing as genital herpes?

Cold sores are technically herpes, yes. The same as genital herpes, no. Cold sores are Herpes Simplex Virus. 
I took a medication as a baby and I was allergic. My issue now, 20 years is cold sores. I broke out so bad I wasn't eating or drinking, my entire mouth was like one big blister. I only get them now when I'm really sick or super stressed. Also, mine aren't contagious, the strand isn't. 
I don't have an STD nor have ever.

I might be wrong but I was always taught that if you had oral sex when you had a cold sore you could give your partner herpes...

They are technically herpes but no you don’t get genital herpes. It’s not an STD or anything so don’t worry. Most people are born with them or contracted them from family members. Typically you get them with signs of a cold. So headache, tiredness, sneezing, any of your typical cold symptoms will usually come with a cold sore. Hence that’s why it’s called cold sore. It’s a sore with cold-like symptoms. You could also get them when you have a cold.
