Whose getting a doula?

Question

Any ladies out there hiring a doula? Have to hired one yet? What do to need most from a doula?

I'm interviewing one who has a background in nursing and a masters equivalent in lactation. My hospital has a midwife and a doctor. But I prefer the midwife who I won't know and that's why I need a doula who I can get to know before delivery.

I think a doula with a medical background is a great idea and will able to help inform you and advocate for you as well as help facilitate breastfeeding post partum. I think picking a doula early is important to be comfortable and start a bond with. My first birth I didn't pick a doula until 36 weeks and it wasn't a good fit. This time I picked a doula at 11 weeks i email her often and will start meeting with her monthly to bond and get to know each other.

I am planning to have an unassitasted home birth so I won't really need an advocate but more someone to help direct my husband in being supportive. I am also a doula so I know what I need and have narrowed it down to 2 ladies.

The most important thing about picking a doula is to have someone you feel very comfortable with. A medical background is nice, but if you don't click, then it's not the right person.

Doulas are primarily for emotional support, so someone you feel comfortable with is the most important!

I'm using the same doula that I had for my first baby. She really helped as my husband was out of town and my mom was there too but I needed them both for different reasons. Kept me focused on my hypnobirthing and my hubby will be home for this one so I may need her to have him cool his jets!!

I'm a doula and having a hard time deciding which of my doula friends I want with me during this birth! It's always a fun experience because I've picked a different one for each of my births so far. 😊 Good luck in your decision!

I wish we could afford it! DF is not on board with spending that much money, and we don't have it anyway. It's expensive here (CT) and he doesn't see the value.

I have one picked out. She happens to be a close friend too. I think it's important to pick someone you click with, and don't be afraid to change if you don't!
