Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is typically one of the first options considered for fertility treatment. It is a simple office procedure with encouraging success rates for multiple cycles (60-70%), and it is one of the less expensive options when it comes to infertility treatment.

How expensive is IUI?

The cost of IUI with a partner’s sperm is typically between $300-$1000. This includes the procedure and sperm washing (removing the sperm from the semen to prevent infection).

That said, note that fertility medications will increase this price. Some fertility medications can cost as much as thousands of dollars.

Additional factors that can increase the price of an IUI include:

• Initial tests and blood work (Several hundred dollars)

• Fertility medications (Anywhere from completely covered to several thousand dollars)]

• Ultrasounds and monitoring (Several hundred dollars)

• Donor sperm (Anywhere from $100-$300 per vial)

How To Pay for IUI

There is a lot of variability in whether or not health insurance plans cover IUI costs. Some insurance providers want you to first prove infertility, whereas others may only cover diagnostic tests. Contacting your specific health insurance provider is the only way to learn the details of your exact coverage.

Some states mandate health insurance coverage. Up-to-date information about your state’s policies can be found at Resolve, the National Infertility Association’s website.

Some clinics will offer cost savings if you purchase multiple cycles of IUI at a time. Sometimes clinics will even reimburse you some of that cost if you don’t use all the cycles to get pregnant!

The most important step is for you to do your homework. Look into your state’s mandates for insurance coverage, call your health insurance provider, and research reputable IUI clinics in your area. Ask each IUI clinic about their itemized costs, and don’t be afraid to ask up front about ways to save money and lower fees.
