What's more of a commitment, Having a child, or getting married?

Question

Another posted inspired me to pose this question to you women:

What commitment is more serious to you, having a child or marriage?

If you say, "child over marriage", tell us why?
If you say, "marriage over child", tell us why?
If it doesn't matter to you tell me why?

However you answer, tell me what you think about marriage. Is it important to you? Why or why not? 
Why do you believe that a lifelong commitment to someone via a child is okay, but not being married to someone? Do you think you're marriage material? How many children/children father's do you have?

I want to know your thoughts respectfully!

Honestly I feel as though one isn't more important to the other. They are both life long commitments that you can't take back.. Maybe I shouldn't say "can't take back" but rather I don't believe in do-overs in either situation. I believe once your married you stay married & obviously with having children you can't give them back! (Lol). Both are to be taken seriously.

A child is a MUCH bigger commitment than marriage. I don't know why anyone would think otherwise.

Marriage isn't that important at all honestly. I'm not against it. I just don't feel it's necessary to have a good, functional, loving, committed relationship.

I prefer marriage before children.  Because i believe children grow best in stable homes with two parents.  My parents have a neighbor she has two kids, and is a good mom to them, EXCEPT, she has a new daddy for them every six months.   It has affected those children negatively.  I know nothing is guaranteed in life and I could potentially end up a single mom (though i think widow is more likley), but hopefully we will never have to worry about it. I feel making that commitment before children increases my chances.

I come from a broken home so marriage was very important to me before we started having children. Anyone can walk out of a relationship whether married or have children. A peice of paper or a child won't stop someone from walking away in my opinion. However I look at it like this. If me an my husband were mature enough and ready In our relationship to be commited to one another enough to take the vow then we would be ready to start a life n family together. I personally for care about the ring or the paper. I care that we made a life long agreement to stand by eachothers side. It's the meaning behind marriage. Now we are expecting our first baby and I feel like my child will be brought up with better morals and a better family structure than I was given.

Marriage is basically adopting an adult sized child - the only differences are that you don't sleep with your child (hopefully O____o) and you can't divorce your child.

So given that, I'd say having a child trumps marriage. However, I personally don't want kids. I may adopt a single child years down the road, but I never want one of my own.

Marriage is more important to me - purely for sentimental reasons. I wanna be able to call someone "husband" when I'm pissed, tell people that my "hubby" did this and that and if he's poly, I wanna be able to use the "I'm your WIFE" card if I ever need to win an argument involving other women.

As for marriage material - I'm like the American version of Mary Poppins, but with more fun quirks. Meaning, I'm perfectly perfect in every way, but I'll also walk around and meow when I'm bored XP

Having a child is more of a commitment.

The child doesn't have a choice; you are the parent and have to commit to their care. But a marriage is a mutual commitment, equal from both sides.

I think a child is a much bigger commitment than marriage.
Although I'm personally against divorce for us, there are ways to end marriages and move on. 
Once you have a child, there's no going back. You can't get rid of your child once they're here, and you're never going to get rid of the man that you had the child with.

I believe children are more of a commitment, because of course you can get a divorce if things don't work out. Or you can leave the relationship if your not married and things don't work out. But having a child there's so much more you have to worry about, and if you do breakup/divorce it can be harder on the child. For example my parents got a divorce when i was young and i was always caught in the middle. Theyd ask me who i wanted to stay with and it made me feel so guilty because i always wanted to spend time with my dad.

A child. Your baby is yours forever. You are the reason it's alive. If you don't care for your child they will die. Becoming a parent is taking someone else's life into your own hands and making all the descions for them when they can't.  It's the ultimate responsibility. And the descions you make about their life can haunt you for the rest of yours even if it was the right descion. Among other things 
Now marriage on the other hand is just a piece of paper and sometimes, but not always, a ring. It doesn't mean you love that person more then you did the day before you married them. And you can easily get divorced. A marriage isn't always forever. Your child is.
