You can purchase and wear a varsity jacket. It's the actual letter that has to be earned. You can put your activities and patches on it, but not the letter, unless you're in a variety sport for a season. You can earn letters for chess club, choir, band, lots of things. She just shouldn't have added the letter yet.

I've never heard of a school dress code saying "only athletes who earn it can wear a varsity jacket" that's bs. The athletes should feel honored that someone looks up to them and admires them.
