How does Membrane sweep work?

I want to go in for a membrane sweep  can you tell me what exactly they do and is it painful?

The amount of pain you feel when having your membranes stripped depends on how soft your cervix is. If it's soft and ripe and already dialating, you won't feel it much. But if it's still hard and not ready to start dialating it can be very painful.
If you don't have your membranes stripped, they will burst on their own during active labor and you probably wouldn't feel them much then!

It hurts more if ur not dialated yet....they stick theirs fingers inside and go around ur cervix
