Shy guys??

I really wanna start talking to my crush but he's really shy and quiet and a little awkward.. I can't really make it too obvious irl either because nosy people at school might start rumours.. How do I approach him through text or whatever?? I don't think he's the flirty type but I just need help, thank you:)
