Birth control?... Not sure which one to go on.

Question

I have a gynecologist appointment today with a new doctor and I'd like to go on birth control.

Which birth control are you on?

I'd like to go on one that is low hormones (I'm bipolar so I don't need a BC that will whack me out more)
~
Won't make me gain weight (I'm around 130lbs)
~
Clear my acne (I have bad acne on my face, chest, and back)
~
Not get me pregnant
~
Any suggestions?

I have used the pill, drop shot and NuvaRing. NuvaRing and this been my favorite and most convenient

Expect to try a few different ones, I went through 3 brands before settling on yasmin, there was one I tried... Frick I had my period for 3 months straight wasn't cool at all

You really need to go over it with your doctor, even more so because you're on other meds and there could be interactions there as far as side effects and effectiveness. Besides, everyone reacts differently to different hormones. Yasmin was a horror show for me, but lots of people like it. Ortho tri cyclin didn't work well either, but many people do fine with it. I loved Micronor, but lots of people don't trust minipills or don't do well with it. What works well for acne/weight/etc in one person may not work the same for you.

I was on ortho tri cyclen lo first and after a few years I suddenly gained weight, had mood swings and broke out more. I am now on a geriatric ortho tri cyclen and have had no problems so far.

Honestly I had horrible side effects with the pill versions. More acne problems weight gain, mood issues, and I was diagnosed with bipolar as a kid. I've been on several different pill forms over the last 12 years and they all sucked.

The shot was definitely not for me.

Nuva ring however was wonderful. No weight gain, no mood swings, no acne, easy to use, lower pregnancy risk because I didn't forget to take it (unlike the pill which the majority of women misuse)

I am taking Lutera. Its a pill thats has low hormones. I take mine constantly without doing the sugar pills. So I only get my period every three months or so. It's nice. Havent delt with much spotting either. I have been on it for over a year a love it.

I was on Microgestin and I loved it! It really cleared up my skin and didn't impact my mood whatsoever. Good luck!

I used Ocella originally,  but it was found to cause blood clots worse than others Yaz (awesome). So then I was put on an off brand called mircrogestin or something like that since it was similar in the hormonal levels of Ocella. Never really experienced a great amount of noticeable weight gain that I could put full blame on the pill for and it helped a little with my acne, but not much. Talk to your gyno about what you are looking for and they will help you. They will never force you on something and if you don't like it they can switch you to another.
