So confused! Help!

I am starting to take ovulation tests this month but I am so confused! Some things I've read say you'll have LH surge 24 to 36 hours before ovulation.. Some things say if you wait until LH is first detected before having sex it may be too late?? Which is true?? Also should I be taking these tests more than once a day?
