Do U.S. debit cards work in Europe? Specifically, countries on the euro?

Yes. I used mine at an ATM in Norway & Sweden. Ours had a $5 withdrawal fee. Which is much cheaper than running transactions constantly. You do need to make sure you tell your bank that you are going overseas and what date. Otherwise, they will cut you off!

I would have thought so bur I imagine the charges will be extortionate. When we traveled to America we loaded up a kind of foreign currency debit card, it worked really well

It depends on what type of card you have. If it's a debit card that has the VISA symbol it definitely does. I would ask your bank. You'll have to let them know you're traveling abroad anyway so they don't put a hold on your card because of odd activity when you're traveling. There are definitely fees though.

It depends. Europe has switched mainly to chip and pin and the U.S. We use swipe cards. Generally, if you have like a visa, you'll be fine, just get international fees which vary

Probably but you may have to pay a fee. Also let your bank know you're going overseas and which countries you're visiting so your transactions don't get flagged (ie they don't think it's unusual activity on your account and suspend it until they've contacted you).
