What even is a promise ring?

What does it mean??? There not getting married. Why a ring?

It's an engagement to be enageged.
Some people use them for when they want to have a sign of commitment but are not ready to be engaged yet. I have one and I think it's beautiful.

My husband got me a promise ring when we first started dating because he was going to a university 400 miles away. It was his symbol to me that he loved me, was committed to me, and gave me a constant reminder of that. It is mostly just a sweet gift to show commitment when your not ready or can't afford to get engaged and married.

I have heard of promise rings in two different ways. One between a. Daughter and her family to promise to keep her body pure until marriage. 
I have also heard of the promise ring in the dating world. In fact have first hand knowledge on this one. I got one as a promise to get married when we were able and he could afford a ring. He was leaving for boot camp. I never ended up with an engagement ring because I broke it off.

I'm not positive on this, but it's something along the lines of "going steady". Seems to be a practice still held mostly by teens. According to my elders, it's from a time were cash was limited so a man would give a woman a used ring (family ring, school ring, or just a band of some sort) to wear until he could get her her own. Which "her own" being a wedding ring. Apparently these rings are the same as engagement rings, so it sounds.

But other than what my grandparents told me, I have no idea.

I got a promise ring right before we went to college. We went to different universities so it was a promise to not let the distance break us up. Now that we've graduated I still wear it as a reminder of what we've been through.

My (then) bf gave me one after a year of dating as a "promise" that we would be married one day. We did get married 4 years later when we were graduated from college. I've always thought they were silly, but I love that ring! However- it was super scary being handed a ring after only a year when I was 19... Thought he was proposing...
