1st trimester tests - good news / bad news
I'm currently 12.5 weeks with twins. I did the materniT21 test at 10w, but just got results. Baby B has always been behind on growth and less active than Baby A. Last week we had the NT screening and the perinatalogist was concerned that both babies had a single umbilical artery/2 vessel cord which puts them at greater risks (heart, kidney, death, prematurity etc). She was also concerned about placental function. The typical 12w blood test showed a low PAPP-A and a 1/71 risk for downs. The materniT21 test (which is more accurate) came back normal, negative for trisomy 21, 18 & 13, which is great news. Unfortunately, at this point we are pretty concerned about the placentas and umbilical cords and the risk to the babies....there can be significant effects, even death, the doctor said that they could "outgrow" it and be fine, or have problems. We are already at risk for preterm birth and low birth weight because they are twins, and now with this it just adds even more risk. She said there's nothing I can do but wait and see what happens and monitor them with ultrasound. I also read online that a diagnosis of placental insufficiency in the first trimester has much greater risk for severe problems and fetal death. Placental insufficiency also puts them at a 40% risk for other birth defects including lung disease, GI disease and brain hemorrhage. Gender screen found a Y chromosome so at least one is a boy (I think Baby B), they think Baby A might be a girl based on the 12w scan (the tech told us that's what she thought). I just want them to be ok!!! We had zero problems with my son and tried for #2 for 3 years before seeing an RE (and all sorts or treatments), having an early miscarriage and finally getting pregnant with the twins. I wish they could just be healthy!!!! So worried now and won't know more until my next scan in 2 weeks.
