This will sound silly but im from the uk and dont know much about America but I was just wondering why america haven't got nhs? And if it was even wanted? Or even talked about? I know it sounds silly but its a honest question

I'm in Canada and we have universal health care. It's ridiculous to me that America is one of the only first world nations to not have it. Health care is not a privilege, it's a right. I can't imagine having to pay for a doctors visit every single time. Or have to delay life saving surgery because I couldn't afford it.

I don't understand it, either, OP, and I am a born and raised American. Health care is seen in America as a privilege, not a right, for some reason. We can give Wall Street billionaires tax cuts, but when laws that try to give people access to health care are passed, well, THAT is unacceptable, apparently. If it benefits the rich, it's an awesome idea. If it benefits everyone else, we "can't afford it."

I'm not saying the ACA is perfect. It's not, by a long shot, but it's a start. Medical care is a basic human right, not a privilege, and if people want to gripe about "their hard earned tax dollars" going to health care, well, I would rathet have MY hard earned tax dollars going to help people than funding yet another war or drone attack.

Would love to have it. I was looking through old medical bills the other day and found the hospital summary from my last birth and almost choked. Over $10,000. And that doesn't include all the doctors' visits and two ultrasounds.  All together it cost us way more to have our kid than to buy a brand new car. How ridiculous.

And I'm already dreading this time around because that was seven years ago. I hate to see how much it's gone up. Which is part of the reason I'm considering  putting off starting prenatal care. We can afford it. But I'd rather not if it can wait a little while. Pisses me off that I have to spend so much money to do something so frickin natural.

But yeah. We live in the greatest country ever... a country where people lose their homes because they can't afford that AND medical care. A country where parents often have to place donation jars out to pay for necessary medical care for their children (because otherwise their kid will die).

It's amazing to me (and not in a good way) that so many people seem to turn a blind eye to this. Maybe it's because we're accustomed to it. But this is one of the reasons I'm often ashamed of us as a nation.

I guess America didn't think to set up a program before we ended up with a country of over 300 million (not counting all the people who live here illegally and aren't documented).
Now, even though we obviously need something, it's extremely hard to do when there's so many people and so many medical businesses involved.  Hopefully one day we will have something, until then I wish they would make healthcare more affordable. (I'm really blessed to have Tricare and get everything basically free, but most people aren't lucky like that)

When the NHS was started, the UK & the US were in very different places. The UK was still rebuilding and the US was in an economic boom. Then our private insurance system got going and it's hard to change. We need changes in medical care, but the Affordable Care Act that was passed is not the way to go. I looked into it, for me to get a plan that covers the same things as my employer plan, I would have to pay $495 per month. That's more than double what I pay now, even including what my employer pays towards my insurance, it's under $400 a month. But if I didn't have insurance through my employer, I would have to pay those rates or be fined by the government.

I think it's a great idea..however because America is so far into debt it will crumble the economy. The reason it works in Europe and Canada is because it has been the law of the land since the beginning. The way Obama is going about doing it is never going to work. He is forcing a policy that cannot sustain because we simply do not have the funding....the money just isn't there...
