Sociopathy/psychopathy: is it curable?

I've been re-reading The Stranger Beside Me by Ann Rule, which discusses the case of Ted Bundy, and how he went undetected for so long.

See the comments for the DSM-V (Diagnostic and Statistic Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th edition,) diagnostic crieria for sociopathy.

Do you think there is a possibility that sociopaths can be treated or cured? Why or why not?

1. Failure to conform to social norms with respect to lawful behaviors as indicated by repeatedly performing acts that are grounds for arrest.

No, that's not to say sociopaths and psychopaths can't be functioning contributing members of society that have a positive effect.

Also sociopathy is not yet clearly defined by phycologists. Unlike pyschopathy which has a very clear test.

There are a number of genetic factors that contribute to psychopathy, something called the warrior gene, and a number of other factors.

Physcopaths are often thought by their peers and superiors to be high performers but when assessed critically are often very average, although they do generally have high levels of intelligence

I think there are treatments, and the6 can lead normal lives. But I believe they should have proper care at all times (meaning they need to be seen by medical professionals regularly). They cannot be cured. My adoptive mother is a malignant narcissist which is very close to sociopath.  She may have been ok if she had treatment early on. But she doesnt believe there is anything to be treated. The state gave this woman 9 children. 9 slaves. She has ruined each and every one of us in different ways. So the effects that these people have on others is devastating. I guess what I am saying is that if they get treatment, it needs to be continous. One person has damaged many in my case.

I don't think it can be cured.
That being said I believe it can be treated, and I don't think there should be a stigma against these people. Many are completely capable of living productive lives. Even extremely 'ill' individuals can manage it, and treat it.

My husband has psychopathy and although not curable, it is treatable, and we live a fairly normal life, considering we both have mental illnesses.

This is point blank my ex-husband... and it still scares me every day. Not only because he continues to senselessly torture me, but I'm afraid it could have been passed on to one or both of our children. So far they seem ok, they show compassion and remorse... but they're only 12 and 9... 😞 I know he'll never change. I can only hope he ends up back in prison where he can't keep hurting people.
