Family is always first?

How many agree with this? What if youre with your so and having or had a baby is the rest of your family still first? My mother in law always tells me family is always first and that my so will always put them first because family is more important than your girlfriend. My so doesnt agree with this. But i was wondering your guys opinions. Is family first? When is family not first?

I think when you get married, it symbolizes you leaving your family and entering into a new family. At that point, your husband (or wife) are now your priority above all else. Immediate family (husband, kids, etc) comes first, then relatives (aunts, uncles, parents) come second.
IMO, before you're married, your parents and siblings of the family you still belong to are your priority.
This is why I think marriage is so important!

But it is also circumstantial. For instance, if his mom has a heart attack, expect him to put her above everyone else for a while. Or if you *want* a new diamond bracelet his brother *needs* help with his house payment, brother comes first.

Hahahahahaha family IS first. And by "family" I mean my current immediate family- my husband and daughter. My MIL has tried to pull this line before too- it's so sad how some women can't let go of their children. Get a hobby, get a life.

I'm going to get all religious on you because she sounds like one of those people that is religious and misapplying stuff to manipulate your SO. According to the bible once you have an SO they are your first priority. You still show respect to your extended family but they are not number 1 anymore. 
If I'm right and she is how I'm guessing she is, let me know and I can put the couple of scriptures on here for you and maybe your SO could read them to her and tell her he respects her but that you are his priority now.

You and your significant other ARE a family! Especially after you have a child! Regardless of whether or not you are legally married. So yes I believe family comes first but I guess not in the same way that she does :)

I agree with Jesse on her post but I'd have to say since your having a child with someone then your relationship should reflect that and your SO should come first. I guess I'd say it's based on your relationship and how mature it is, that would determine weither or not your boyfriend comes first, not marriage.
