Things you need for successful anal sex:
1. Open and honest Communication with partner. 
2. ALL THE LUBE! For anal I'm a big fan of either silicone based lubes (not for use with condoms or silicone toys!) Or heavier weight water based lubes. Olive oil is also super effective, and easy to come by.
3. Breathing. Holding your breath tenses you up, which is no good for inserting things into a booty. 
4. Relaxing your anus. Very important. You tighten up, and it's worse than pulling teeth. Try breathing exercises and pushing "out" just a bit. Not enough to actually poop, but like you're trying to ease out a little fart. The pushing helps relax the anal sphincter, which makes things much easier. 
5. Clitoral stimulation (assuming you have one). Clitoral stimulation, through hands or vibrating toys, is a beautiful way to not only relax, but to help heighten your enjoyment. 
6. Proper positioning. Your first time? Try being on top. That way you control the speed and depth of penetration. Slow and steady wins the race here. Don't rush, give your body time to adjust, and enjoy.
