Nipple shields?

Question

Are nipple shields okay to use if baby is struggling to latch on? Midwife said no and that it will make milk supply low. 
What's your experience/thoughts? Please give reason to answers.

My son will be a month old this week, and we use a nipple shield. He wouldn't latch without it. He is now getting better, but sometimes still wants the shield and will get frustrated without it. I have NO production problems whatsoever! I'm not sure how the two would even correlate.

I use them, baby won't latch without them but I had flat nips in the beginning which is why I started using them. I can actually feed him entirely out of one side and not run out if I wanted to be lopsided. I don't think less milk has anything to do with them at all. I've also never pumped either, just baby eating as much as he wants.

If it's going to get s baby to nurse who otherwise isn't going to latch, what good is NOT using one doing your baby? I've used one since birth (5 weeks). I DO have some supply issues but it's due to a previous breast surgery and PCOS. I've tried to take her off the nipple shield and I just don't have enough for her to hang on to. Works great for us.

My midwife recommended them to me and today is my first successful breastfeeding day. I'm never taking them off, lol

My son was taken directly to NICU after birth and I wasn’t able to attempt breastfeeding for his first three days. Since he had a bottle first, he didn’t know how to latch to me and the LC gave me a nipple shield without any explanation. He’s just now under 3 weeks old (2w 5d) and we just latched without it for the first time successfully. I never had any issue with my milk supply (I get full so quickly it’s almost annoying) and as long as baby is able to eat and empty your breast, it won’t affect your supply at all, it may even help because they’ll be able to get all of it and you’ll fill quicker (supply and demand). I've been using it for 3 weeks without supply issues. I also pump 1-2 times a day. My LO prefers it, but will sometimes feed without it. Rarely. 😉

It's suppose to lower supply because your body doesn't get stimulated like skin to skin contact baby doesn't get as much milk with a shield

I didn't vote because I don't feel it's the same for everyone. I use a nipple shield, and when I pump, I'm getting between 6-10oz every time at 7wpp (combined, not just one boob), so for me, I have had no supply issues whatsoever. But I can't imagine that'd be the case for everyone. I've heard that statement before, that shields reduce supply, and can't imagine it came out of nowhere. I might just be in the percentage that is not effected by the shield.
