It helps know that you have ovulated. Let's you pinpoint exactly but can't tell you that you are about to. Makes it easier for advance planning and determining your cycle but not effective as a "oh my gosh I'm ovulating and need to bd now" kind of thin. I do it because I like to track data (math teacher) and it helps me pinpoint ovulation when the strips don't always work (like if I miss the surge or whatever) then I can at least pinpoint it.

It helps people tell when ovulation occurs. Just an extra step for people ttc.

You will see a spike in your temp 24-48 hours after you have ovulated. It helps you learn your pattern. But it's kind of pointless to rely on it alone because once your temp has gone up its too late. It'll usually only Up up by a degree or less.
