Is there a difference between yelling at your child compared to talking sternly/frustratingly?

As bratty as it sounds, I can never take my mom seriously when she resorts to screaming. Which is always. Mom does not 'talk sternly' she yells.

DAD HOWEVER. OH MY GOD. Super intimidating when the 6'7 brick wall talks low and slow.

Nothing works better if you follow these steps. Get down to the child's level, look into their eyes with a mean look on your face, whisper, and a stern voice. Make them answer your questions!!

Definitely. I'm not a mom yet, but with the kids I nanny I only raise my voice if someone is in immediate danger of getting hurt. Otherwise it's a stern look and their name in a "warning" voice and they usually knock it off. Yelling, in my experience as a child and as a teacher/nanny, accomplishes nothing and makes the child feel awful about him/herself.

I'm asking soley bevause my brother in law seems to think that they are the same. That when I speak to my kids in a stern tone I'm "yelling" at them. And honesty it just pissed me off.

My mother always shouted. We were and still are so use to it we don't even blink. My father on the other hand. Will raise his voice on the 1st word of the sentence and near whisper the rest. It would give you chills. He's usually a quiet, gentle, happy man.

My brother and I have always talked about when our mother uses the "scary calm" voice, you know she means business. Yelling is never helpful, it puts people on the defensive, getting in the way of true communication.
