Did your relationship change for the worse after having kids?

I was talking to a man who is going through a divorce. He said kids change everything and that your relationship with your significant other dwindles after kids. Everything becomes about them and even when you and your significant other do things by yourselves the topic of conversation is usually about the kids and your vacation turns into buying things for the kids. He made it sound terrible. I know everyone is different but I'm curious to see how everyone else feels.
