What's the point in marriage?

What do you believe the point in marriage is? A lot of people do it because their religion says its the right thing to do, others do it for legal reasons. Why did you? Why not just be with them forever without being married?

Not asking to receive hateful comments, just honestly wondering different points of view.

Our reason to get married was because we wanted to be a family. You are now bound to each other legally. It's not just well he is my boyfriend. I share his name and we have agreed to be together forever. We don't believe in divorce. If a man was not willing to stand up in front of all his family and friends and agree to be with only me then I wouldn't have kids with him. I don't believe in children outside of marriage. (Not bashing anyone who does, it's just not for me)

Well, first off, my husband and I don't believe in divorce. You're promising to be there for each other till death. When my husband and I first got married it didn't feel much different because we already lived together. But now, it's really set in that we both love each other with our entire soul and I know for a fact that we will never ever leave each other. I will have someone by my side until death. With just dating, there's always a doubt that your SO could decide to leave.

To me a marriage is a peice of paper. However my husband and I had a traditional wedding because he wanted to get married and I wanted a wedding. A wedding to me is the important part because that is when you show your closest friends and family that you are committed to this person for life! I love my husband more than anything but we basically have been married for 3 years, shared everything, lived together, all that... now its just official and I would not have it any other way :)

My husband and I had to take marriage counseling before we got naoed and we were asked this same question and we had to come up with our answers independently when we meet the next week we both wrote the same thing.  " To take our relationship to the next step, by getting married we are both agreeing that we want to be with each other forever and that it brings us even closer." That's what  my view on the point of marriage means.

When you are legally bond it is harder to leave. I feel like to many call it quits and don't take it seriously anymore. Not sure these days. For us, we wanted that commitment to one another. And as an example for our children.

I said I couldn't be arsed, my parents are divorced and remarried.... What's the point in promising the same thing to more than one person?

After years we stopped talking about it....

On a surprise holiday to Italy, in Rome he proposed to me, he is not an impulsive man, he said he'd wait until I was ready, if ever, he wants me to realise how much he loves me and he wants me to share his name.... He put me u see no pressure whatsoever but absolutely made me feel like I wanted nothing more than to be his wife it was so weird!

I said yes, we celebrated, now I'm 37 weeks pregnant with our first baby, so excited to share the name with my best friend and son/daughter and as we keep saying, to have the most chilled, multicultural (as we are) fun wedding and party ever in March next year..

This doesn't make us stronger, our child is it everlasting commitment, you can divorce and move on but you'll always share a child ..... And that's why we both believe, our child is our marriage to each other,

But we fancied a party :-) with both our families and friends, our families and friends live 100s of miles awayan lots abroad  .... It's a great opportunity to share our child and a day with all those we care about as it will probably never happen again.

So everyone is different I guess.

My husband is not a religious man. He thought that marriage was just a "Certificate of Achievment " for the woman to hold a higher social position than single friends/enemies. He said he loves me, he doesnt want anyone else, why cant we just "pretend".
I dont know if it is cultural, life examples, or religious... all I know is that I couldnt see myself with anyone else ... EVER... I love him and marriage to me is showing the other person how much they mean to you. You are, for lack of a better term, putting your "money where your mouth is".
Him standing in front of our friends and family and getting married symbolized to his family and friends that he has found his other half.. the one he cant live without. To my family and friends, it was showing them that he really does love me, and wants to take care of me the best way he can. 
To me it is all about the commitment. . Actions speak louder than words...
