I hate the padded ones and will never use them. I hate when my friends buy them and say oh I know the risks! Why the heck would you buy them in the first place then.. :(

I waited until my little one was seven months and used padded ones. I tied them up an inch and always kept a fan going. She kept getting stuck in the slats. New research shows SIDS has to do with bleeding in the inner ear and disorientation.

None!  I thought I'd get the breathable ones with my first but decided to wait to see if I needed them. Guess what, never found the need.

As far as padded bumpers go, the worst possible outcome of not using bumpers would be your baby getting a limb stuck between the slats and breaking a bone. This isn't common, but it's the worst possible outcome. They won't bump their head on the slats so hard that they cause injury like some believe. The worst possible outcome of padded bumpers would be death. Chose which risk you'd rather take.

They say don't use them at all because of increasing the risk of SIDS because they can squish up to the bumper and cover their nose and mouth and suffocate. Because of that i feel like mesh ones would be ok but i have not read anything about mesh ones, just the warning not to use at all.

We have both. Baby is in pack and play for the first 3 months. Then in its crib with breathable bumpers until 1 year. Then we put the padded bumpers on. We like the padded because it prevents it's legs from going through the railings and getting stuck. Happened to my oldest MANY times. Very scary.
