Pit bulls and babies?

Hi I'm a ftm and I'm 29 weeks with twins. I'm currently still at home with my parents and my SO and I are looking for a place together preferably an apartment for the time being. Anyways he has a pit bul she's unlicensed and not fixed. She is a very sweet dog and I love her. But he doesn't understand that most apartments don't take dogs bigger then 15 pounds. Also he thinks that if we find an apartment with a yard that during the day while he's working and I'm taking care of the babies that we will keep her outside then when he gets home she gets to be an inside dog. How safe do you guys think that would be for new born babies? Aside from being such a big dog, but the dirt and allergens that she will be bringing in. I personally think she needs to be an outside dog all the time, I don't want my babies around all that dirt, shedding hair and allergens. Not to mention how dirty the place would get id have to vacuum everything everyday and clean everything everyday. And that would be my job because my SO would be supporting us. I wouldn't even want to bring her Cus it's just not practical for our situation. But he won't leave her behind with his brother, and he thinks we will be able to bring her to an apartment. Any advice anyone? Or anyone have any experience with new borns and pit bulls?

First of all, I understand why he won't leave her behind. To me when you get a pet, you get a pet until they die. Unless they are harmful for your baby I see no reason to get rid of it. Dogs are also really good for helping kids build up their immune systems.

Second, pitbulls if raised right, are AMAZING with kids. My parents have a pitbull and I was watching my best friends baby, who was about 6 weeks old, at my parents house and the dog would not leave my side when I had her. When she started crying she got super worried and was trying to find a way to comfort her. With my friends toddler she lets him chase her around the house. He will pull on her ears and sometimes he's really trough with her, but she just looks like she loves every second of it.

But, not all dogs are like that. I would just see how she acts with the baby. And go from there.

There's actually been numerous studies about kids that grow up exposed to animals have less allergies to those animals.

Also, I think the idea of an outside only dog is mean to the dog. They're meant to be a part of the family. Most get so bored and destructive when just left outside all the time. But that's my own personal opinion there.

As far as the pit thing, it's all in how they're raised. I've met way more aggressive "family dogs" like Golden's and Dalmatians than mean pits.

No matter what breed of dog it is, you NEVER EVER leave it alone with your kids.

Pit bulls are also know as the nanny dog. They have a history of being great with kids. That being said, any dog needs to be trained, exercised and respected. Usually I'm not for giving up a responsibility because things don't go as planned. But to have an unfixed 3 year old dog that you don't want, she might be better off with someone else.

I don't have any experience with baby's and pit bulls but will say that an apartment is no place for a dog unless its a small dog they definitely need room to run and play or the poor dog might become depressed. Also you guys will need to ask about the dog policy there can be many places that won't allow you to have certain breeds of dogs.

This is my baby boy and he is amazing with my 5 year old daughter that he's known since she was a baby Pitbulls are absolutely amazing with children if raised properly my daughter tugs on his tail and ears and he loves it. He is also an indoor and outdoor dog and has caused her no health problems (: i hope this helps and you're able to find a place to live that lets you keep your dog.

It has nothing to do with how you raise them, sorry! I had a friend who "raised her pit right" & the pit indeed loved the child & was good with him until one day.......she had her son in his high chair eating peas & whatever fell the pit would eat no biggie right? Well she went to answer the door & when she came back the pit had yanked her son out of the high chair by his neck, he did massive damage to spine, neck & brain. The boy is still alive but in a pretty much vegetable state. So to each their own but I would never let a pit near any of my children even if it was "raised right". Trust me she never once thought her pit would do such a thing to her child.

I don't think it's ideal to get a small apartment with a large pit bull. Are the two of you able to rent a house, even if you shared the rooms with other renters? It's also important to walk a large dog every day. Aggression can come from lack of exercise too.

Definitely make sure the apartment you guys choose will allow a dog at her weight. I'm not sure where you live so I don't know about dog discrimination laws there, but I know where I live it is against the law to breed discriminate meaning an apartment complex or house realtor can only have a weight limit. 
As for having her around the babies. You have to take the steps of introducing her to the babies. I have a pit that is an inside and outside dog, he potties outside and when we leave he goes outside. I don't worry about the dirt or allergens he tracks in because baby needs a strong immune system. I taught him a lot of things pertaining to being around children because I have a niece and her friends used to come over so he needed to know that jumping on people is a no go. Also that if they were to put their hands in his food bowl he waits for them to move. I also tugged on his ears, tail, and skin from the time he was a puppy so he knew what it was like in case the kids did that. There are other steps im now taking because there will be a baby in the house.

My husband and I have a pitbull, Kyra she is a year old.  and we live in an apartment. Our apartment doesn't allow pitbull so we are already risking it by having her we are in the process of moving, that be said I say look and see if the apartment or any apartment you are looking into allows those pets because you don't want that added stress of having to be on the look out. Because remember maintence is allow to enter your home when you are not there and if they see your dog outside they can report you or give you a warning.

As far as your dog and the babies how is the dog with people young people? And how old is the dog? We are taking Kyra out puppy to training because although she is great with kids she has never been exposed to newborns and it's something you wouldn't want to take lightly.  I've seen on YouTube videos on how to introduce your dog to a newborn. So if you have the time I would suggest youtubing "introducing dog to newborn" or even looking it up they have tons of article to help you prepare your dog for the new additions.

But I can totally agree with you on wanting your dog to be an outside, that was one of the main things my husband and I talked about because our dog sheds a lot that will be a lot of work. And unneeded stress on you.

Do you think your husband will be okay if the dog stays at the famikies house until you guys get situated in your new home?
