HSG test

I have to get an HSG test done after my next period and I've read a lot that it is very very painful. My doctor said it feels like period cramps, but I have now read otherwise. Anyone had this done and can share their experience with pain? Did you take any medicine? I also read it helps fertility, we've been TTC for 6 months just wondering if it will give us some help with that too.
