Dorm room pets?
Pets are proven to decrease stress, which is of course abundant in college students. Even watching a fish swim around can help the most panicked person. Many dorms at universities/colleges don't allow pets for numerous reasons. The main ones being rampant animal abuse, building damage and physical hazards -like allergies, bites or clawing. Reasonable reasons, but many people forced to leave beloved pets behind as they make the rough transition from home life to dorm think otherwise. Any good pet parent would protest though. So how do you feel about these options?
1. They shoud be allowed, with integrated room inspections to cut down on animal abuse -dorm inspection would also involve animal inspection (making sure they are being fed, aren't visibly sick and the like) And school property isn't being damaged -encouraging cleaning further and animal training, which is always good for the pets. I'm also adding end of semester inspections -as this time seems to be the time where most of the abuse happens, as many students abandon the animals in the dorms to starve.
2. Separate pet friendly dorms. Most campuses have more than one set of dorms, so how about making some dorm buildings pet friendly and the others not? This would greatly lessen allergy issues.
3. Pre move in inspections for pets -to test aggression levels.
4. Adding informational material to the student help centers -about things like average costs of different pets, common behaviors, so on...
