Not having contractions??

Question

So, I went for my 40 week appointment today. My cervix is thin, ripe and I'm about 2cm. My midwife could feel baby's head very low. But I'm not having contractions. Anyone ever heard of this? What does it all mean? I'm so confused...

First baby? I didn't have my first contraction until after my water broke with my first. It's very common.

I'm 40 + 1, no contractions that I can feel are regular.  My cervix is softening and thinning but still high.  I may go for membrane sweeping on Friday.

It is quite common to thin and dilate to a few cm without being in active labour (have contractions).
