BBT and Cervical Mucus

Am I getting this right... Your bbt temp is supposed to be low right before ovulation then have a steady increase during ovulation and after?? Also the cervical mucus? Where does that fall into place with ovulation? Is the EWCM supposed to happen right before ovulation or during!? I keep reading conflicting explanations and I just need the true dummy explanation! Thank you! :-)
