A few comments on gender...(how to be a better ally, imho)

1. There are not just two genders. I have many genderfluid/genderqueer friends who identify as they. This can mean many things. Personally, I've come to discover that there are about as many genders as colors of the rainbow.
2. The Caitlyn Jenner conversation has brought to my attention the number of people who imagine trans people to conform to some cis standard of beauty. The hiding of her hands in the photos as though her more masculine looking hands are shameful made me a little disappointed. I see a lot of people discussing how trans people they know "look like their new found gender",  but honestly,  when did looks get assigned to gender (clothing. Hair, when most of us have it all over our bodies. Etc). I'm thankful that this has sparked conversation and challenged people to come forward who don't subscribe to the cis normative ideology of beauty.
3. People who don't have surgery or take hormones aren't any less male or female. They are a woman even if they have a penis or no boobs.
4. As a result of the above comments,  it's a smart idea to ask ALL preferred  pronouns to make it easier on those who don't conform to the binary to introduce themselves. I started wearing my preferred pronouns on my nametags to help people feel more comfortable. Use "they" pronouns when in doubt.
