What kind of birth control do you use? Not all forms of birth control inhibit ovulation (the minipill offered in the US, for example, only stops ovulation in 50% of women) but there are other changes it makes to the body to prevent pregnancy as well. Many birth controls also thin the lining of the uterus so if an egg is released and fertilized, it won't be able to implant and become viable.

Cervical mucus should stay thick on hormonal birth control. If it's the first time it's happened, I would use backup protection and just watch going forward. If it's happened more than once, I'd call the doctor, you might need a higher dose of hormones.
