Would you have another baby?

I know I'm a little behind, but I just read My Sister's Keeper, and thought the hypothetical situation would be a good debate topic. If your child had a disease that could be treated or cured with a bone marrow or organ transplant, and no one in your family was a match, would you have another baby just in the hopes that that child may be a match for the older child? Do you feel it's ethical?

Not a chance. I would take every other measure I could to save my child's life, including searching for donors, experimental treatments- anything- but I couldn't bring a baby into the world with such a heavy burden to bear. What if that baby isn't a match? What if the younger sibling resents the older sibling? What if the older child dies before the younger sibling is old enough to actually consent to a medical procedure? I would never force my child to give their sibling their organs or bone marrow against their own wishes. That is a lot of major surgery and a lot of time in and out of hospitals for a small child, and had I been born with a job, I would resent my parents.

Absolutely not. It is so selfish and unethical to bring a child into this world to undertake such a serious job. What if the child is not a compatible match? The child may feel worthless and have issues from that. Or what if the child is a match but does not want to risk his or her own health and body by undergoing such procedures. Those tests and procedures are very painful and can negatively impact someone's body forever. You cannot expect to have a child simply to use their physical body. Parents don't own their children's bodies. When I was in nursing school 4 yrs ago they made us watch the movie and I hated it ever since.

Absolutely not. How selfish. Imagine knowing you were only conceived for your organs etc, or only in hopes that you'd be a match to your sibling.. You were only born to help your sibling.. Not for any other reason. Wow. No.

You're breeding another human being into the world to specifically aid another individuals health, which is a chance on its own as to if they are a good match, or if the elder sibling will heal at that point anyway. Wasn't there another couple of books just like that that depicted the other individual as essentially livestock for tissue/cellular farming? Maybe this would be ok if the family was already planning to expand, but what are the odds (Assuming they are a match) that is younger individual will want to go though donation? That they will even like eachother? You're just going to have to pitch them a guilt trip aren't you? What would you go with? "I wasted so much time on you for this?" or "If your sibling dies, it's your fault"? Believe it or not, not all families are happy with the cards they're delt, so the "but that's your sister/brother!" line won't work in all situations. And if I remember correctly, bone cancer spreads pretty fast, so you're going to have to wait on TTC, 9ish months to have a baby, and then deal with taking it from a fragile infant or waiting years for MAYBE a child to say yes and the eldest still be alive and receptive. This is all assuming for whatever reason you couldn't find a match outside the family of course.

So what will you do? Forcefully take it from a baby, or wait for a coherent child who may or may not what to do it?

The whole idea is just completely risky and unethical to me.

I read the book and saw the movie...you can never know if you'll ever be in a situation where you'll make a decision that wasn't probably right but you couldn't bear to see someone you love in so much pain, that you'd want to relief some of the burden, but just as in this book " my sister's keeper", you kind of forget, you will have 2 kids instead of one, living with the pain and the burden. It will be selfish and a hasty decision made out of desperation. It's sad. I personally don't think it's right, but I wouldn't judge someone going through it either. I couldn't imagine the kind of hurt a parent or a child for that matter, would be going through

I remember being very very angry reading this book because I definitely do not agree with planning a child with the purpose to USE IT AGAINST ITS WILL to save my other child. Not okay.
