Trying to conceive and when to give up

I've been trying for about 18 months now and doctor told me i may not get fertility help as I had a mini stroke last year I'm really upset about this as we have had all the tests with no conclusions it just doesn't seem fair has anyone been through anything similar. When should you stop ttc?
