Which IUD is better and why?

My dr told me Paraguard (copper/non-hormonal) can give you really heavy periods but said nothing to that point about Mirena (hormone). After reading both brochures, it looks like Paraguard's heavy periods regulate after 2-3 months but Mirena's are heavy as long as you have it. Any comments based on experience?

Mirena generally results in lighter or no periods.

I've had the paragard for a few weeks now and have yet to have a period. When I got it I bled for a week. I didn't want the hormones. It went in extremely smooth and didn't feel a thing. The next few days was hell with cramps but after that it was fine.

I actually just had my paragard placed yesterday. This is my second time with it and I really like it. My heavier periods lasted about 6 months last time and then eventually evened out and were regular and normal. With the Mirena be prepared for your period get super light or maybe stop completely. I prefer the paragard because it is non-hormonal. So it doesn't stop your period, and there are no other side effects from the hormones (I.e, weight gain, skin changes, emotional affects) the only side affect that I had with the paragard was an increase in discharge and a slight odor. That can be managed though with good hygiene. It's really personal preference though.
