Me and the guy I've been intimate with have talked about it, but I'm not sure if I really want to because it might hurt..

It may be uncomfortable, but shouldn't really "hurt". Use a lot of lube & play with it with your finger, or have your man do it to get the muscles ready for penetration. Tell him to take it slow & you're scared it may hurt & make sure he knows to stop if it is too much for you.

When done correctly, the 'pain' is minimal. It can be intense, and is very different, but usually ultimately pleasurable. I will concede that it is not for everyone, and that's okay, but I would definitely recommend trying it a small number of times to make sure. If you decide to do it,  here are some tips. 
Steps to having successful anal sex:
1. Maintain open and honest two way communication before, during, and after the experience. 
2. Lubrication is a must. Don't be afraid to get in there with the lube and don't use it sparingly. Lube is important! 
3. Relax your anus. This can be done with breathing techniques, clitoral stimulation(HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!), and gently pushing out like you're trying to poop. Emphasis on gently, though. 
4. Start off slowly. Don't go all out Balls to the wall immediately. Start slow and work your way up to speed and depth. (and don't pull out all the way until you're done.)

6. Be careful with enemas, because they can sometimes leave your colon a bit sensitive, and that's no good for a beginner to anal. But you can try timing your sexual encounters around times where you either haven't eaten recently, or after you've already voided your bowels and thoroughly cleaned up afterwards. 
7. After anal, DO NOT REINSERT ANYTHING ANYWHERE ELSE WITHOUT A THOROUGH CLEANING WITH SOAP AND WATER! I cannot stress this enough. It doesn't matter how cleaned out you are,  it's not worth the risk of serious infections.
8. Baby wipes are great for immediate spot cleaning during and after the experience before making your way to the bathroom for proper clean up.

It is not pleasant.  Having something go the opposite direction of how it should is not a good feeling. Made me feel like i was sick. The second time we tried, the tip alone was enough for me to say stop and probably took 3 times the time it took to get it in haha it didnt matter how much lube

Besides all the great advice from some of these ladies I find that once you relax and actually get the penis in let him just rest it three without much movement for a minute or so, it helps your anus to stretch and relax a bit more.

You have to be very relaxed and go very slow. Use lube and fingers or a toy to slowly open your anus, when you feel ready add more lube to you and his penis and then slowly try penetration. You on top or spooning are the best to start out because you have more control and he can't thrust as much.
