Discussing Race and Gender on Glow

Gunce • Head of research at Glow. Unwilling infertility expert. 2 kids after 6 IVF treatments.

I want to write this as myself - Gunce. I am a female, caucasian Turkish-American. When it comes to race and gender, I have learned enough to know that there is plenty that I do not know. Plenty that I do not understand. In fact, will never understand.

There is currently an ongoing discussion about both race and gender-identity in America. I believe that this community at Glow can play a crucial part in this discussion, for the simple reason that our community is made of a subset of all people. By, and large, we are women. We are mothers. Daughters. Sisters. We come to this community with an inherent understanding of each other's points of view. Believe me, I see it ever day. In every conversation. We GET each other.

And we can use this bridge to reach a deeper understanding, right here, right now.

We can use it to start to listen. Really listen.

We can use it to acknowledge other people's truths. Even when they make us uncomfortable.

We can use it to realize that just because something is outside our experiences, doesn't mean it does not exist.

We can use the Glow community to broaden our understanding of the viewpoints of people who we might not get to associate with in our daily lives.

We can do all this. And we should, because ultimately we all want the same thing for our children: A better world. A safer world.

Thank you for hearing me out.
