Birth control question!

Are the sugar pills just to help you so you don't go off track of taking them for the week? I NEVER take the sugar pills but I always start my pills again after the period week. Are they something I should be taking??? If so, do they affect chances of getting pregnant on birth control? (Probably a stupid question but my doctor never really explained it to me)
