Doctors and medication

I have pcos and Me and my partner are planning to ttc in a couple of months. We're currently just preparing at the moment. Such as stopping smoking and going on vitamins and getting healthy.
I was wondering if anyone has been able to get their GP to prescribe things like clomid or any other medication aimed at helping to get pregnant without being referred to a specialist.
I have an appointment with mine soon and plan to ask to be put back on metformin as it helped lose weight like some sort of miracle drug (haha ) but I have heard clomid is meant to help wonders.
We are taking pregnacare his and hers which we have heard amazing things about ... Anybody had any luck or bad luck with this ?
I guess I will try pretty much anything to have a baby even though it's still early days and were not trying but we're not preventing right now either
